The forehand is the easiest shot to learn in tennis for beginners, however, many beginners tend to have wrong form when hitting. Using the wrong form can lead to a very fast plateau in a beginners game.
The first step is learning how to grip the racket correctly. The correct grip depends on the style of play that you prefer. If you are a player that prefers to put a lot of top spin on the ball, then you should use the half-western grip. If you prefer a lot of top spin, then you should use the western. If you like to serve and volley, then you should use the eastern. The western grip is popular for players who want to create a lot of top spin.
There are two types of stances for hitting a forehand; the open stance and the closed stance. The open stance is where your feet are facing the net and the closed stance is where our feet are facing away from the net and pointed towards the fence. Either stance is fine as the more important factor is that your shoulders are turned and ready to strike the ball.
Your shoulders and leg position are a key factor to ripping a good forehand. Immediately turn your shoulders once you know that the ball is coming towards your forehand side. If you turn your shoulders ahead of time, it’ll be easier for you to take a full swing at the ball. Your racket should be above wrist level and never below your waist. Your racket will be out of position if it’s too high or below your waist.
At this point, your feet should be shoulder length apart, your shoulders should be squared to the tennis ball (facing perpendicular to the net) and your racket should be cocked back. When making contact with the ball swing at and up at the ball around waist level. Swing up and through the ball, your racket should be across your body above your opposite shoulder when following through correctly. Swinging up and across creates top-spin on the ball. These are the basic steps for hitting a correct forehand and the first steps for learning how to play tennis.
