If you are planning on building a wooden shed in your backyard but are concerned about the cost, you can construct one yourself at a relatively low cost. The process of building wooden sheds is simple and is worth the extra effort. An inexpensive shed is well within your wallet’s reach if you have a few basic carpentry skills.

First, you’ll need to assess your needs. Storage for tools? Perhaps a mini backyard retreat? Or will you be using your new shed to store a riding mower or snowmobile?

Another important consideration you will need to keep in mind will be the shed’s size. Once you know what you will be using it for, it will be much easier to figure out the best size.

Once you’ve decided how you will use your shed, you are now ready to do online research. A good starting point is to search for wooden shed images. This will give you a better idea of what will suit your needs. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, search for a set of wooden shed plans that are downloadable. There is a wide selection of plans available online for around $5.00US. You should even be able to find some that are free.

Since we are talking about a limited budget, a great option is to use wood pallets. Boards used to make pallets have been used to build complete sheds. They can be purchased for around $4.00US or better if bought in bulk. With some research, you can find them free of charge. That’s what I did. I found a company that threw them out to be recycled. They were more than happy to let me have as many as I needed.

By using the wood from the pallets, you won’t be able to use the shed plans precisely as they have drawn, but you will be able to use it as a guide for things like dimensions. The pallets can be used for everything from the foundation to the door.

It is possible that the only things you will have to purchase are the shingles or other roofing material, paint and hardware. But even the shingles can be found at a greatly reduced price if, for instance, someone overestimated the amount of shingles needed for a larger project and they have some extra left over.

With some basic carpentry skills and a little resourcefulness, your “new” wooden shed is just a weekend or two away.
